Nowadays, the old slogan 'there is little to do in Kuwait' hardly ever applies. There's so many places to go, things to do, markets, food to eat and activities to attend. None of the below are perfect for small children, but when you have visitors coming to Kuwait, you will see destinations.

Arab Organizations Building (Arab Fund Building) – Located in Shuwaikh on the same road as Zain Headquarters, the Arab Fund Building is one of the most beautiful in Kuwait. The interior houses one of the most spectacular Arab architectural and interior design collections in the country, with a multistory atrium, expansive diwaniya (with water fountain), indoor garden and tea room. Aqua Park – The ultimate in water park fun for kids in Kuwait, Aqua Park is located on the Gulf Road next to the Kuwait Towers. The park includes several swimming pools and play areas including a wading pool with slides, showers and buckets that dump loads of water on the heads of screaming children. Pack flip flops (slippers) that provide some traction, a change of clothes and towels. Be prepared for a bit of chaotic fun. Telephone: 2243-1960

Beit Dickson – Home of a well known British political agent stationed in Kuwait, HRP Dickson and his wife Violet, the house is located in Kuwait City on the Gulf Road just across from Souq Sharq. The house was built in 1870 for a Kuwaiti merchant before the Dicksons moved into it in 1929. However, after the invasion, the Kuwaiti National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature restored the house and opened it for visitors. Today, the building is one of the very few manifestations of the 19th century Kuwaiti architecture. Not recommended for children but a lovely mid morning meet up place prior to brunch.

Beit Al Othman - Located in Hawally, [map], showcases traditional Kuwaiti home with artifacts including old vehicles, uniforms, furniture and other household items. Entrance is KD 1 and visiting hours are 9:30am to 12:30pm and again in the afternoons from 4:30pm to 9pm except Friday mornings.

Beit Sadu - Sadu House is a cultural center concerned with the promotion of Kuwait's traditional textile arts and related skills. Located on the Gulf Road next to the National Museum, Beit Sadu is also the home of the Khayt Group crochet community and regularly holds textile and art exhibitions. http://www.alsadu.org.kw/index2.html

Contemporary Art Platform Kuwait – Located in Industrial Shuwaikh, CAP is a non-profit art center for modern and contemporary art. It offers lectures, films, screenings, workshops and events for children. Open from 10am to 8pm, Sunday to Thursday. Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah (DAI) - DAI is a cultural organization based on a Kuwaiti private art collection owned by Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah, founder of the Al-Sabah Collection and his wife, DAI director general and co-founder Sheikha Hussah Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah. They currently have a child-curated exhibit, Long Ago Zoo on view. Hours: Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 7pm. Fridays from 2pm to 7pm.

Grand Mosque – Located in Kuwait City directly across from Seif Palace (on the Gulf Road, just past Souq Sharq and the Fish Market), the Grand Mosque offers tours for groups or individuals. Women should bring a headscarf (and if possible, an abaya) and wear conservative clothes and comfortable, easy to remove shoes. Telephone: 2246-7058 or 2246-7105.

House of Mirrors – The private home of Kuwaiti artist and writer Lidia Al Qattan, the House of Mirrors includes a reported 77 tons of mirror and 102 tons of white cement for the creation of a series of mirror mosaics decorating the interior of the home. The museum cum residence includes a ‘Room of the Universe’ (bedroom) and a ‘Basin of the Sharks’ (hallway). Ice Skating Rink – Located in downtown Kuwait City on the same street as the Musical Fountain and the Discovery Mall, the ice skating rink is a perfect place for an afternoon of fun. There are actually two rinks, an Olympic-sized one for adults or more practiced skaters and a smaller rink for kids. The rink also rents support frames for young skaters who need help on the ice. Kuwait National Museum - When visiting the National Museum, you can view thousands of items in display, like: ancient fossils, bones, Islamic artifacts, flint and potteries tools. All these displays and more are a glimpse on the culture, heritage and history of the Kuwaiti society and Islamic world.  The Kuwait National Museum is located on the Arabian Gulf Street between Seif Palace and the National Assembly (Parliament) just next to the new Kuwait National Library. Kuwait Towers – A great place to take the kids for an afternoon snack and a chance to see the entire Kuwait city from on high. Located on the Gulf Road, the towers are the iconic symbol of Kuwait. Entrance is KD 1 per person. Telephone: 2244-4021

Kuwait Zoo – Located in Omariya, the Kuwait Zoo is a great place to take the kids for a day out – especially in the cooler winter or spring months. The zoo includes many local animals and has large grassy area for picnics, a local trolley that circumnavigates the zoo and snack stands. It’s open from 8am-8pm and entrance is 500 fils. Maritime Museum - Located next to the Museum of Modern Art in Kuwait City across from Souq Sharq, the Maritime Museum has displays on Kuwait's maritime history including boats, dhows and other maritime artifacts including displays of equipment used by pearl divers. Hours: 8.30am to 12.30pm and 4.30pm to 8.30pm Monday through Saturday and 4.30pm to 8.30pm on Fridays.

Musical Fountain – Next to the Discovery Mall and Ice Skating Rink in Kuwait City, the Musical Fountain offers regular show times and has a garden. During winter, it is open from 3:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Telephone: 2242-8394

Planetarium – Located inside the Kuwait National Museum grounds in Kuwait City (just down the road from the Parliament Building), the Planetarium offers daily shows on astronomy, physics and more. Morning and afternoon shows, recommended to call ahead to confirm timings. No Friday or Saturday morning shows. Entrance is free. Telephone: 2245-1195 or 22456534

Scientific Center – Located in Ras Salmiya along the Corniche, the Scientic Center is a great destination for a morning or afternoon outing. The Scientific Center includes an aquarium with penguins, shark tank and other local marine / wildlife.  There is also a Discovery Center (not to be confused with the one in Kuwait City) with educational exhibitions and sandpit. Science Museum - Located downtown Kuwait City near the Liberation Tower, the Science Museum was Kuwait’s first museum, and it contains displays about the history of the petroleum industry in Kuwait, natural history, electronics, space and aviation, and zoology subjects, as well as a planetarium. It also boasts an 18 meter whale skeleton. Telephone: 2246-6973. Hours: 9am to 12am and 4:30-7:30 Saturday to Wednesday.

Souq al Mubarakiya – Located in downtown Kuwait City, Souq Mubarakiya is a popular tourist destination but also regularly visited by locals. There are dozens of shops for clothes, shoes, jewelry, misbah (the local prayer beads), scarves, spices, toys and more. At the back end of the shops next across from the NBK building and next to the main mosque are a food court with lots of Arabic cafes and two large play areas – one for older kids and one for tots. Perfect for an afternoon out.

Tareq Rejab Museum – A must see in Kuwait, especially for Islamic art aficionados or those interested in Islamic calligraphy. In 1980, Tareq Rajab a private Kuwaiti citizens opened his personal collection to the public. The 30.000+ item collection includes Islamic arts treasures of ceramics, gold and silver jewelry, English manuscripts, metal and glass works, old English costumes, and musical instruments. Tareq Rajab Museum is open everyday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, except on Friday, it opens from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Telephone: 2531-7358
